Harriet Tubman, was born Araminta Ross in Maryland in 1882. She was born into slavery, escaped, then returned south 13 times to help free over 70 slaves using safe houses known as the “Underground Railroad” during the American Civil War. Deeply religious, Harriet was nicknamed “Moses” as she led the slaves out of bondage and helped them make a new free life. In 1858 she helped John Brown plan and execute the raid on Harpers Ferry to initiate a slave revolt. Tubman died in 1913.
