Clarissa Harlowe Barton, born in Massachusetts, was a self taught American Civil War nurse and school teacher who founded the American Red Cross. Barton volunteered to aid wounded soldiers and organize medical centers in and off the battlefield. In 1869 Barton was introduced to the Red Cross. She was chosen to start the American branch of the Red Cross. Clara was active in the woman’s suffrage movement and an activist for civil rights.
