Florence Nightingale, born in England in 1820, was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale became known while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War. Nightingale’s nickname was coined “The Lady with the Lamp” as she often made rounds of wounded soldiers at night. Florence was a published writer, an avid female activist and human rights activist throughout her lifetime.
