Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo, was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1907. “Frida” was known as a folk style surrealist painter, often painting colorful, Mexican and nature inspired, self portraits. Due to childhood polio and a bus accident, Frida suffered from chronic pain throughout her life. In 1927 she joined the Mexican Communist Party and met her husband, fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera. By the 1990s Frida art was being recognized and she became an icon with the LGBTQ and feminism movements. Kahlo died in 1954.
