Creola Katherine Coleman Johnson was born in West Virginia in 1918. Johnson was a mathematician whose work as a NASA employee was critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. She helped pioneer the integration of computers to perform mathematical tasks. Katherine was one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist. Her achievements include, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, NASA Silver Snoopy Award, NASA Achievement Award and Congressional Gold Medal. Katherine died in 2020.
