Mary Jackson born in Virginia in 1921, was a mathematician and aerospace engineer at NASA. She became NASA’s first black female engineer in 1958. After many years at NASA, Mary became a manager and worked to influence the hiring and promotion of women in NASA’s science, engineering, and mathematics careers. Mary died in 2005. The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to Jackson posthumously in 2019.
