Maya Angelou (Marguerite Annie Johnson) was born in Missouri in 1928. Angelou was a writer, poet, memoirist, and Civil Rights Activist. Known for her autobiographies, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings brought her international recognition. After that Maya went on to receive many awards and over fifty honorary degrees. She was a popular and respected spokesperson for black women and black culture. Maya died in 2014.
