Amelia Mary Earhart born in Atchison, Kansas in 1897 was the first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo. Earhart was a member of the National Woman’s Party and an enthusiastic supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1937 Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean attempting to be the first woman to fly around the world. They were officially declared dead January 5, 1939.
