Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born in Alabama in 1913. Rosa was a Civil Rights Activist known for her crucial role in the Montgomery bus boycott. In 1955, Parks refused to sit in the “colored” section of the bus and was arrested. In federal court in 1956 a decision was made that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Parks received the NAACP’s 1979 Spingarn Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal. She was the first woman to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. Rosa died in 2005.
