Sally Kristen Ride was born in Los Angeles 1951. Ride was a NASA astronaut and physicist. At the age of 32, Sally was the youngest American astronaut to travel in space. Sally became the first American woman in space in 1983. She was a prominent college professor of physics, a nonlinear optics researcher, and she served on committees to investigate the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle disasters. Ride died in 2012 of pancreatic cancer.
