Cicely Louise Tyson was born in New York, New York. She was an American actress whose career spanned more than seven decades. Her notoriety was for her portrayal of strong African American women. Tyson also starred in various theater productions. Cicely won various awards including an Honorary Academy Award and three Emmy awards. In 2016 Tyson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cicely was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2020.
