Dorothy Johnson Vaughan born in Missouri in 1910, was a mathematician and human computer for NASA. In 1949 Dorothy supervised a group of female human computers. She was the first African-American woman to hold that management position. Mary taught herself and staff a computer programming language preparing for the beginning of machine computers. She then went on to manage the Analysis and Computation Division. Dorothy died in 2008. The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to Vaughan posthumously in 2019.
