Mamie Till-Mobley was a teacher and civil rights activist whose courage helped spark a national movement. In 1955, her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, was brutally murdered in Mississippi. Refusing to let his death be ignored, Mamie insisted on an open-casket funeral so the world could see the violence inflicted on her son. The powerful images published in Jet magazine shocked the nation and galvanized the Civil Rights Movement. For the rest of her life, she spoke out against racial injustice and worked to educate and inspire young people. Her strength and advocacy turned personal tragedy into lasting impact.
