Mary McLeod Bethune born in South Carolina, was an educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, and civil rights activist. She founded the National Council for Negro Women in 1935. Mary was also appointed as a national adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, where her role gave African Americans an advocate in government. In 1904 Mary started a private school for African American students in Daytona Beach, Florida. Eventually Bethune’s school became a college, setting educational standards for today’s black colleges.
