Sacagawea was born in the Lemhi River Valley, Idaho in 1788. She was a Shoshone Native American who assisted the Lewis and Clark Expedition exploring the Louisiana Territory. Her husband Charbonneau, supported her assistance. Today Sacagawea is a symbol of women’s worth and independence, there are many statues and plaques in her memory. In 2000, the United States Mint issued the Sacagawea dollar coin in her honor. Her death is in question. It has been recorded as 1812 after the expedition and other accounts report 1884.
