Sojourner Truth (born Isabella “Belle” Baumfree) was born into slavery in New York in 1797. Belle was an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She escaped to freedom in 1826 with her infant daughter. She went to court to recover her son in 1828. This pioneer was the first black woman to successfully win this type of case against a white man. “Belle” renamed herself “Sojourner Truth” as she felt that God had called her to go into the countryside “testifying the hope that was in her”. She had many notable contributions during the Civil War era. Sojourner died in 1883.
